Veteran friendly GP practice

Armed Forces veteran friendly accredited GP practice logo

Nene Valley Hodgson Medical Practice are proud to be an accredited Veteran Friendly GP Practice and to support our veteran community. A veteran is anyone who has served for at least one day in the Armed Forces, whether as a regular or reservist. It means the same as ‘ex service personnel’ or ‘ex forces’, which are terms that some people choose to use.

As a Veteran friendly accredited GP Practice we:

  • Have a clinical lead for veteran health, who is supported by the whole Practice to improve veteran health services.
  • Ask patients ‘Have you served in the Armed Forces?’ to help identify veteran patients
  • Support veteran patients to access dedicated health services
  • Recognise the importance of identifying veteran patients within our community
  • Understand the unique health needs that veterans have
  • Strive to provide veterans with the very best care and support
  • Know about the specialist veteran healthcare services that exist
  • Undertake regular training and development to ensure we’re able to deliver the very best care to veterans in our community and meet the commitments of the Armed Forces Covenant

What is the RCGP advice on veteran’s health?

Whilst many aspects of the health needs of veteran are the same as for the general public, there are sometimes some significant differences, particularly in relation to conditions attributable to service life and the associated impact for individuals and their families. These differences can be reflected in the way in which healthcare is delivered, the range and types of some specific services provided and the long-term impact upon patients and families.

Research shows that becoming accredited benefits veterans with them getting access to the right support for a better patient experience and improved outcomes. Furthermore, practice staff say it makes them feel motivated and proud of their role.

What do I need to do?

If you are a veteran patient, please let us know that you have served so that we can make sure that we understand your health needs and ensure you are getting the best possible care.
